TMA Operators and Drivers: What You Need to be Job-Ready

by CivilEdge |

If you're aiming to step into a TMA Operator/Driver role, one thing is clear: experience matters, but the right licences and certifications are what get you through the gate.

On major infrastructure projects, employers are looking for people who can do more than turn up and take direction. They need operators who understand traffic management, can work safely in high-risk environments, and know how to handle live traffic conditions with confidence. For professionals with hands-on traffic management implementation experience, this can be a strong next move - but only if your compliance is in order.

At CivilEdge, we help workers get site-ready with the training needed to meet industry expectations.

Why TMA roles matter

TMA Operators and Drivers play a critical role in keeping roadside crews, motorists, pedestrians, and cyclists safe. These positions are about much more than driving a vehicle. They require constant awareness, strict adherence to procedures and strong communication on live worksites.

The Non-Negotiables: Licences & Certifications

Before anything else, you need the paperwork. These are not just compliance items - they show employers that you have the knowledge and legal requirements to work safely on Australian worksites.

Credential

What it means

White Card

Mandatory for construction sites across Australia. Demonstrates baseline construction safety awareness.

Valid Heavy Vehicle Licence of a suitable class to operate the TMA i.e. MR licence or above

Essential for operating TMAs.

Suitable road classification tickets required in some states

Essential for workers responsible for implementing and monitoring TMPs on site.

RIIRTM301E - Operate truck or trailer mounted attenuators (TMA)

Essential for anyone operating a truck or trailer mounted attenuator in live traffic environments.

First Aid Level 2 and CPR

Not always mandatory, but a strong advantage. Some sites require it, and employers value it highly.

What employers are looking for?

TMA Operators and Drivers are expected to bring a mix of technical competency, safety awareness and practical site experience.

Typical responsibilities include:

    • Implementing and monitoring Traffic Management Plans across worksites and events.
    • Completing vehicle pre-start checks and confirming the vehicle is suitable for work
    • Deploying and stowing the attenuator in line with operating procedures and site-specific Traffic Guidance Schemes.
    • Monitoring live traffic conditions constantly and responding immediately to potential impact risks.
    • Attending pre-start toolbox meetings and maintaining clear two-way radio communication throughout the shift.
    • Communicating with heavy vehicle and wide-load operators about lane occupancy on the nominated radio channel.
    • Monitoring weather, road conditions, traffic behaviour, pedestrians, and cyclists to maintain site safety.
    • Reporting hazards, near misses, and incidents promptly.
    • Following direction from supervisors, team leaders, and inspectors to keep operations compliant and efficient.

The skills that set you apart

Beyond holding the required tickets, the strongest candidates are those who can demonstrate:

    • A solid understanding of workplace health and safety principles.
    • Confidence driving heavy class vehicles.
    • Availability for day, night, and weekend shifts.
    • Hands-on traffic management experience, ideally across civil, road, or infrastructure projects.
    • The ability to plan, prepare, operate, maintain, and clean up TMA equipment safely and efficiently.
    • Strong communication skills for radios, team coordination, and live traffic environments.

This role suits people who stay calm under pressure, pay attention to detail and understand that safety is not negotiable.
