SHORT TERM / LOW IMPACT (STLI) COURSE FOR TEMPORARY WORKSITES

by CivilEdge |

Keeping Traffic Moving, Safely and Simply

At CivilEdge, we understand that not every roadwork project requires large crews or complex traffic control. For temporary, low-risk worksites, the Austroads-approved Short Term / Low Impact (STLI) Traffic Course provides the right level of preparation. As an Austroads Approved Training Provider, CivilEdge proudly delivers this course to help workers operate safely and efficiently in low-impact environments.

Whether you’re performing routine pothole repairs, vegetation trimming, or other minor, short-duration tasks, this non-accredited course is designed to equip you with the essential skills and knowledge to manage traffic safely and efficiently—without the need for a static worksite.

What is STLI?

Short Term / Low Impact (STLI) refers to temporary works that are:

  • Low in risk to road users and workers;
  • Short in duration, often completed in minutes or hours; and
  • Carried out without the need for accredited traffic management personnel.

Instead of full-scale traffic management plans, STLI works are managed using simplified Traffic Guidance Schemes, validated through a site-specific risk assessment. The result? A lean, safe, and efficient approach to traffic control.

Who Should Take This Course?

This course is ideal for:

  • Maintenance crews performing fast-moving or mobile works
  • Councils and contractors engaging in minor repairs
  • Field staff responsible for vegetation control or line marking
  • Anyone operating in an environment where traffic management is necessary—but not complex.

Static vs. STLI: What’s the Difference?

To understand where STLI applies, it’s important to distinguish between different levels of worksite impact:

STLI Work:

  • Pothole patching
  • Pruning roadside vegetation
  • Minor inspections
  • Tasks completed quickly or across multiple sites

Not STLI Work:

  • Major construction projects
  • Deep excavations
  • Long-duration repairs
  • Situations requiring physical barriers or static worksites (refer to AGTTM Part 3)

Why STLI Matters

The STLI course empowers individuals and small teams to manage low-impact roadwork activities responsibly, keeping themselves and the public safe. It’s an efficient way to ensure compliance, reduce risk, and maintain road safety standards without overcommitting resources.

Key Benefits of the Course:

  • Understand when and how to apply STLI measures
  • Learn how to conduct a site-specific risk assessment
  • Familiarise yourself with simplified Traffic Guidance Schemes
  • Boost operational efficiency and safety on short-duration tasks
