Career Paths in Traffic Management Industry
The Traffic Management Industry represents a robust $2 billion sector, experiencing significant growth due to escalating infrastructure investments throughout Australia. This industry presently employs approximately 200,000 professionals, emerging as an appealing sector for individuals seeking career opportunities and career development. In this blog post, we will delve into the many career pathways available to those currently working within, or considering entry into, the Traffic Management Industry.
Upon acquiring your Traffic Management accreditation, you gain the flexibility to chart your career course in a direction that aligns with your interests and aspirations. As a Traffic Controller and Traffic Management Implementer, you are responsible for interpreting and implementing traffic management plans, installing/removing signs, and devices, directing traffic at various locations, slowing or stopping vehicles and using communication to guide drivers safely through work zones, road closures or events. Alternatively, individuals can pursue a career as a Traffic Management Planner or Designer, involving the meticulous planning and design of traffic management plans for construction sites, events, and roadwork projects. These professionals are tasked with ensuring the secure and seamless movement of both vehicles and pedestrian traffic.
Furthermore, career progression in this industry can be facilitated through upskilling initiatives. Completing a course in "Operate a Truck or Trailer Mounted Attenuator (TMA)" equips individuals with essential knowledge and skills for driving and setting up TMA equipment (*this also requires a heavy vehicle class licence).

The biggest lesson would be is that Safety is the number one priority. Policies, procedures, and safety documentation are there for a reason - to help get everyone home safe. It’s not just holding a bat standing on the side of the road. You may need to work in the rain or on hot days, you need to be physically fit as you may stand for majority of the day and set up long worksites. You also need to have excellent communicate skills to be able to work together with various stakeholders (including government agencies, construction companies, traffic management experts and the general public) is.
