ASHTAS Installer B – Rigid
In high-risk environments where there’s no room for compromise, rigid road safety barriers play a critical role in saving lives. If you're an experienced road safety operative ready to take your skills to the next level, the ASHTAS Installer B – Rigid course is your next step — and CivilEdge, in partnership with Lantra and Austroads, is here to guide you there.
What is ASHTAS Installer B – Rigid?
ASHTAS Installer B – Rigid is a specialised training module under the Austroads Safety Hardware Training and Accreditation Scheme (ASHTAS). It focuses on the correct and compliant installation of rigid road barrier systems, which are crucial in locations where deflection must be minimal — think bridges, tunnels, and narrow medians.
This is not an entry-level course. It’s the second part of the Installer B training stream, following successful completion of:
- ASHTAS Operative, and
- Installer A.
Only then are you eligible to undertake this technically advanced module.
Why Rigid Barriers Matter
Rigid barriers — typically made from concrete or steel — are high-strength, low-deflection systems. Unlike flexible or semi-rigid barriers, they do not yield when struck by vehicles. Instead, they safely redirect errant vehicles back onto the roadway while maintaining their structural integrity. Their application in constrained or high-speed environments makes their installation a high-precision task.
What You’ll Learn
Participants in this course will gain essential knowledge in:
✔️ Understanding types of rigid concrete barriers – including slip-formed and cast in-situ systems
✔️ Interpreting design specifications, and ensuring compliance with height, alignment, and reinforcement requirements
✔️ Managing installation tolerances, quality control, and concrete testing
✔️ Recognising and implementing safe transition connections and terminal protection strategies
✔️ Identifying and reporting damages to installed barrier systems
✔️ Maintaining awareness of quality and safety requirements throughout the installation process
Who Should Attend?
This course is ideal for:
- Experienced operatives involved in the installation of rigid barrier systems
- Workers seeking accreditation under ASHTAS
- Teams involved in bridgeworks, tunnel construction, or high-speed road projects
- Professionals who want to ensure compliance and safety in roadside infrastructure
Note: Completion of Operative and Installer A is mandatory before enrolling in Installer B – Rigid.
